It’s February And It’s Pet Dental Health Month!
A dog’s oral hygiene is very important and pet parents are responsible for maintaining a good oral health regime as unfortunately, unlike us, dogs cannot brush their own teeth or reach for some mouthwash.
Practising good dental care with your pets at home will lead to fresher breath and help keep your furry friend(s) happier and healthier.
Even the busiest dog owners can easily incorporate simple practices with just a couple of minutes of maintenance a week.
1. Bush your dog’s teeth
As with humans, brushing teeth is the foundation for good oral hygiene. Ideally, you should be brushing your dog’s teeth every day – at an absolute minimum once per week will be adequate. If you find that your dog is a handful when trying to brush their teeth you may find that keeping a strict routine of brushing daily for less than a minute will help your dog tolerate the sensation.
There are many toothpastes that are designed specifically for dogs and come in a wide range of flavours, finding one that your dog enjoys will certainly help make brushing much less of a chore.
2. Dental Fresheners
For humans, brushing your teeth goes hand in hand with the use of mouthwash. It’s very similar too with dogs. Dental sprays or Dental Foam can be used to keep your dog’s breath fresh. We manufacture a Dental Foam that we recommend using daily after brushing to aid in the reduction of plaque build-up and occasionally after eating to reduce bad breath. Our Breath Freshening Foam contains a sweetener, making using the product feel like a delicious treat for your furry friends.
3. Chew Toys
Switch over from your dog chewing your old trainers to a good quality chew toy. Dogs have a natural instinct to want to chew, it helps them stay simulated. Use this natural urge to your advantage and choose a highly textured toy that is firm, whilst chewing the toy, the textured surface will rub against the teeth, loosening and removing plaque.
4. Vet Check-Ups
As with people, it’s important to ensure you are keeping up to date with vet check-ups to ensure your dog’s overall health is in check. If you have any concerns about your dog’s teeth or oral health, it is important to make your vet aware of this and they can offer advice or treatment if required.
